December 29, 2003 – Tokyo, Japan – Trend Micro Inc., (TSE: 4704, NASDAQ: TMIC) a global leader in antivirus and content security products and services, today announced the company has won the prestigious Porter Prize for 2003; this annual prize is awarded based on recognition of companies that have achieved and maintained superior profitability in a particular industry though implementation of unique strategies based on innovations in products, processes, and management methodologies.

Since its start in 1988, Trend Micro has focused on being a leading antivirus solutions provider, and concentrates on the continuous development of innovative technical products and services that help customers manage the costs of virus outbreaks through Trend Micro Enterprise Protection Strategy.

Selection criteria for the Porter Prize is based on superior sustained profitability, unique value propositions, strategic continuity over time, innovations that enable strategy, utilization of capital, a distinctive value chain, and an overall fit across different activities within the organization.  Collectively, these criteria help reflect the sustainability, manageability, and flexibility of the organization.

In a recent BusinessWeek article (September 22, 2003), Trend Micro was featured as one of a new type of high-tech global organization, referred to as “transnationals”, in which executive functions and core corporate functions are dispersed to take advantage of localized resources and available talent.  This has been viewed as part of an evolution of new global business models.  In 2003, Trend Micro was also the focus of a Harvard Business School case study that examined the organization and management style that has contributed to Trend Micro’s unique approach and presence in the security industry.
